CHAPTER TWENTY

DEEP SPACE, HALFWAY TO KVCH—HALF A DAY LATER

“DO YOU think we should have waited until we heard from Quill?” Nova asked Gamora as they sat in the pilot seats, navigating their way through a section of the galaxy that neither of them had even explored before.

“No,” Gamora said, though part of her had wanted to remain at the High Evolutionary’s sanctuary until they had heard something. “We have no idea if they were successful, and we don’t have the luxury of time on our side. Every second we delay could mean the end of life as we know it.”

“Fair,” Richard replied, staring out into the abyss, his helmet resting on the floor next to his seat. He had flown through the cosmos many times, fought so many battles out here that he’d lost count, but it was kind of nice to be in a ship for once instead of flying through the void with only the Worldmind to keep him company.

“I wish I could talk to my parents, let them know I’m okay,” he said after a long moment, mostly to himself.

“Neither of us may be okay for much longer,” Gamora replied absentmindedly, reading the computer’s readouts. It would still be several hours before they would reach Kvch.

“True,” Nova said, shaking his head. “Still, it’s hard not to worry about your parents at a time like this.”

“I was raised by a cosmic murder god after my real parents were killed in front of my eyes, and then he trained me to be the deadliest assassin in the universe.”

“Oh.” He crossed his arms and let out a sigh. This was going to be a long trip.

“I’m sorry,” she said after a long, awkward moment of silence. “I actually understand what you mean. To my own surprise, I find myself deeply worried about the rest of the… Guardians.”

“You’re really calling yourselves the Guardians of the Galaxy? Drax mentioned that but I thought he was just kidding.”

“Drax doesn’t have much of a sense of humor,” Gamora corrected.

“Yeah, I guess not,” he said, then laughed without any humor. Gamora raised an eyebrow. Humans really were odd.

“HOW ARE you?”

Moondragon approached Warlock as he sat quietly in Ship’s conference room, staring at the floor. He looked up at her, forced a smile.

“Moondragon… right?” he asked, trepidatious.

“Yes. But you can call me Heather,” she responded, smiling, sitting down across from him.

“Heather,” he repeated. “Thank you. And to answer your question, I’m… okay? I don’t know. I’m trying to make sense of all the memories that are speeding through my brain. I’m not even a hundred percent sure they are memories. Or at least my memories…? It’s very confusing.”

“You know,” she said, choosing her words carefully, “I am telepathic. I would not do so without asking, but if you’d like, I may be able to help you make sense of the storm that’s currently raging inside your skull.”

He contemplated her for a moment. Then: “That’s tempting. But I think I’d rather try myself. At least for a little while.
